Chin Hairs

ledelstein2

Hair grows .2 - .7 inches per month except on my chin where it grows .5 - .75 inches overnight. When the light falls at just right angle and catches my chin hairs, they glow silver - it’s an awe inspiring sight. People have gone temporarily blind! I read that hormones and genetics are responsible. I never knew my grandmothers, so I scoured photos but let’s face it, photographs from the 30s are not going to show chin hair unless the strands are long enough to braid.

I want to be clear. I'm not talking about moustaches on women. That is entirely another topic - and, for some unknown reason, they are never silver.

I’m not alone. Having lunch this week with my friend Barbara, before the food arrived, I noticed that she casually slid her hand across her chin while she was talking. It was all very unconscious as the back of her hand gently slid along under her chin. Then her hand stopped. It moved backward and halted. Obviously, she found a hair. I couldn’t see it from across the table, but for the rest of our meal (I had a salad; how righteous is that?), between bites, her hand crept back to touch the hair - she couldn’t help herself. I felt quite superior, having plucked my silver tresses before leaving the house.

I've instructed my daughter, it would be useless to tell my son, that, as I age, she is to monitor my face carefully and let me know if she catches a chin hair before I do. She promised. I told her that even if I am comatose, she has instructions to pull chin hairs. I don't think Hospice people tweeze. I signed a DNR (do not resuscitate) years ago. I better sign a PCH (pull chin hairs). Delicate reader, for your own peace of mind, consider having this discussion with a trusted loved one who still has decent vision.

In March, 2025, Not The Trip We Planned will be published by Koehler. For better or worse, I am featured in the novel. God, I hope they don't give me chin hairs to make some cheap point about aging. Maybe I'll contact the publisher directly.
